Henderson Hospital shines a light on enhancing patient safety

Bacteria-fighting lights allow Henderson Hospital, the first U.S. hospital to install them, reduce errors and raise the level of patient care.

UHS is committed to investing in the latest technology to improve patient safety. Henderson Hospital is the first hospital in the U.S. to purchase and install new technology including operating room light fixtures that keep patients safe by continuously disinfecting the environment.

Patient safety is at a top priority for all hospitals. UHS takes patient safety seriously and made sure its newest facility, Henderson Hospital, incorporated the latest technology available for infection prevention.

Indigo-Clean™ is a technology that uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to fight bacteria that may lurk in rooms where patients are treated. The LEDs create a white light that also contains a narrow spectrum of indigo-colored light. When a room like an operating or recovery room is in use, the white light mode is on, providing ambient lighting and continuous disinfection. When a room is not in use, the disinfection mode is automatically turned on to provide maximum disinfection power.

Henderson Hospital Indigo-CleanIndigo-Clean has been clinically proven to reduce harmful bacteria, including MRSA and C-difficile, by up to 70 percent more than routine cleaning. Henderson Hospital, which opened in late 2016, was the first hospital in the country to install Indigo-Clean operating light fixtures in its operating and recovery rooms.

"We are excited to be at the forefront of hospitals across the U.S. by providing this new, proven technology as another tool to help keep our patients safe," said Sam Kaufman, CEO and Managing Director of Henderson Hospital.

Part of the excitement about Indigo-Clean is the upside it provides for patient care. Unlike many Ultraviolet (UV) devices, the light is safe for both patients and healthcare providers. Operating automatically, it helps to further reduce human error as well as ensure the room is ready to receive the next patient without disruption.

"Maintaining a safe, clean environment for our patients is our number one priority. Indigo-Clean safely, automatically and continuously disinfects the environment, which means there is no need for room downtime when it's in use," says Kaufman.

"Because the Indigo-Clean system is automated, it doesn't require a person to operate it which also reduces risk of human error. These concerns are particularly important in our operating rooms which are in constant use throughout the day," Kaufman said.
