Registered Nurse, Manatee Memorial Hospital
Katie Powers, a nurse at Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, Florida, has made the trip every year since 2009 from her home along the Gulf Coast of Florida to Boston, Massachusetts, where she volunteers as a member of the medical team at the Boston Marathon.
In 2013, Katie was stationed in the medical tent at the finish line, directly across the street from where one of the two explosions rocked the marathon. Katie was tending to a runner when the blast occurred. She said when runners and spectators arrived in the tent covered in soot, the first-aid station turned into a trauma unit.
Katie said the medical team was calm and focused as they treated injured runners and spectators and were happy to be on hand so they could take care of the people who were injured.
Thank you, Katie, for volunteering and making a difference in people’s lives.
