Vice President and Controller
"UHS has provided all the career advancement opportunities that I could have hoped for ..."
Year you joined UHS: 1983
First position at UHS: Staff Accountant
Responsibilities in first position: Accounting for corporate entities and preparation of monthly intercompany report.
Why did you choose to work at UHS?: I had two primary career goals: to enter the healthcare industry and to work for a relatively small, start-up company that had long-term growth aspirations.
Year you assumed current position: 2007
Responsibilities in current position: Responsible for the company's consolidated financial statements, including Securities and Exchange Commission filings, as well as compliance with internal policies and procedures. Supervises operations of UHS' Corporate Accounting Department. Also serves as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Universal Health Realty Income Trust
What has UHS meant for your career growth? During my 27 years of employment at UHS, I have been fortunate enough to have my area of responsibility grow and expand as the company has grown. Our annual revenue has grown from $275 million to over $7 billion. That explosive growth has provided tremendous career advancement opportunities for everyone within the organization and I am one of the extremely fortunate beneficiaries of those opportunities.
During my employment at UHS, I have been involved in many areas of our business including acute and behavioral healthcare facilities, acute care hospitals in the U.K. and France, outpatient surgery and radiation oncology centers, the medical equipment business, the leasing business, the health insurance business and, of course, the medical real estate/real estate investment trust business through Universal Health Realty Income Trust.
I have been asked many times in recent years why I would remain employed at one place for so long. My response is very simple; given our growth over the years and the many lines of business that we have invested in, my duties have changed and expanded considerably. As a result, UHS has provided all the career advancement opportunities that I could have hoped for and therefore, there was no need to look elsewhere.
What has been your most valuable experience working at UHS? My most valuable experience at UHS is not related as much to what we do, but why we do it. Because our mission is providing high quality healthcare to the hundreds of thousands of patients that we serve each year, we are providing critical services that cure illnesses, treat behavioral disorders and extend and improve the quality of life. The duties that each of us at UHS perform every day contribute to this one primary goal, making it all extremely worthwhile and rewarding.
