Recognized for Quality Healthcare and Service Excellence

Our hospitals are recognized for providing high quality healthcare. Nationally, eight UHS acute care hospitals were named Top Performers on Key Quality Measures® in 2014 by The Joint Commission, and U.S. News & World Report ranked nine more as High Performing in 2015. Since the Top Performers program was started in 2011, a total of 14 different UHS hospitals have been recognized, some for multiple years.

Many of our facilities have advanced accreditations and certifications for cardiac and stroke treatment, as well as diabetes, oncology, orthopedics, bariatrics and emergency care. The George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC, was one of only 52 hospitals in the United States that received national recognition for meritorious outcomes from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program. The academic teaching facility achieved some of the highest scores for patient safety and outcomes.

A Higher Level of Care, Using Advanced Technology

Being recognized for quality, safety and positive outcomes is a team effort. Our clinicians work to identify and implement advanced technology, and processes and procedures that can make a real difference in our patients’ lives. Using best-in-class products and evidence-based treatments, we deliver a higher level of care --- faster, more efficiently and with better outcomes.

Because patient safety is our top priority, we have implemented electronic health record (EHR) systems in all of our acute care hospitals. It’s important to us that healthcare providers have immediate access to patients’ medical records, lab results and diagnostic images. Features of our EHR system include computerized physician order entry, in which physicians speak into a recording device and their notes are immediately transcribed to become part of the patient’s individual health record.

In addition, biomedical devices (such as equipment in Intensive Care Units (ICU) ) relay patient information directly into their health records. Bar code medication labels also helps improve patient safety.
