Physicians

Physicians nationwide know they can count on UHS facilities to provide patients with the highest level of care through qualified professionals, advanced equipment, and modern facilities.

Northern Nevada Medical Center in Sparks, Nevada, is among many UHS facilities that saw an increase in patient satisfaction scores during 1997.
Fully 40 percent of all UHS facilities have been awarded Accreditation with commendation, the highest quality rating issued by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospital Organizations (JCAHO). This compares to an industry average of just six percent, and illustrates UHS's commitment to superior quality.

Radiation oncology centers
UHS has long recognized that one of the keys to building successful hospitals is to establish specialized healthcare practices that are not offered by other facilities in a region. As a result, UHS has created a growing network of centers that are dedicated exclusively to specialized healthcare services. These facilities fill distinct market niches in their communities, making them the clear choice for referring physicians.

The most prominent example of this approach is our behavioral health division, which currently operates a total of 20 hospitals nationwide. Typically, these hospitals are the leading psychiatric care facilities in their regions, offering proven treatment methodologies and exceptional levels of quality.

Having succeeded in the challenging behavioral health field, we continue to expand on this concept of specialization in a number of ways.

For example, at Doctors' Hospital of Shreveport, our 118-bed acute care facility in Louisiana, we created the Bone & Joint Clinic, which is operated by two nationally recognized orthopedic surgeons.

Our Radiation Oncology Division currently operates advanced cancer treatment facilities at ten free-standing locations and three UHS acute care hospitals nationwide.

In the past year, our Radiation Oncology centers have increased their revenue contribution by building reputations for service excellence and cost-efficiency in their respective markets. In addition, several UHS Radiation Oncology centers are currently implementing leading-edge treatment technologies, including three-dimensional Conformal Treatment Planning, prostate seed implants, and High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy.

Universal Surgery Centers now encompasses eleven freestanding ambulatory surgery center facilities to meet the growing demand for outpatient surgery. In 1997, these centers performed more than 22,000 procedures and provided high-quality, low-cost procedures for their respective communities. Ten of the eleven centers have received JCAHO and/or AAACH accreditation with the remaining center awaiting final survey results. The division has implemented overnight stay capability and sleep study programs in several of the centers.

Facilities such as our radiation oncology centers (above) and women's health centers (right) thrive by offering unique services to their local communities.

UHS has also established a successful network of Renaissance Centers for Women, to serve the special health needs of women. There are currently three centers in operation, with more in development.
